Maths and Targeted Early Numeracy <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Each term I try to target an area of education, this term I am focusing more on numbers.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I have preschool and year 1
so my activities are targeted at early years at the moment but could be adapted. When I am having a
saturation of maths I tend to spend 2 minutes ever 45 to 60 minutes to quickly do one quick
question.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Any moment between
activities and at the end of the day finish with a website. Some weeks this is less possible but I try.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">If I am not having a saturated</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> focus on this then I tend to spend 10 minutes per day.<br /><br />PINTEREST is a great place to get ideas... there is a load more which I have used but these are this weeks favourites.</span></div>

<span style="color: #4f6228; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Number recognition<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">We have these great
Number cards which have numeral, word and pictures. Although it is not a ten frames I find it
great for number recognition and an opportunity to put in order Numbers
1-20. I love that it is the NSW
font. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #4f6228; mso-style-textfill-fill-alpha: 100.0%; mso-style-textfill-fill-color: #4F6228; mso-style-textfill-fill-colortransforms: lumm=50000; mso-style-textfill-fill-themecolor: accent3; mso-themecolor: accent3; mso-themeshade: 128;">Before and After</span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I use these card for
before and after which I find for teen numbers is crucial to <o:p></o:p></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">practice.</span></div>

<span style="color: #4f6228; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Dominoes<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The back of these
cards have pictures and numbers to play dominoes. We don’t play this a lot as it takes time but
if we finish the weeks work early or have some days in the schoolroom with no
programmed work. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">These are great for
number recognition of words. I love
flashing these or dropping them in a pile and we all work together to
sort. <br />
<br />
I often hold them up and cover the number and ask the child to read the word… they can use the
ten frame to count. <br />
<br />
Will often hold one up and ask how many blank spaces or how many dots. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<b><u><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">RESOURCE: ONLINE websites<o:p></o:p></span></span></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <br />
I am not a great fan of looking at the computer screen a lot in the primary
years of schooling but it is a necessary evil for many reasons.
I usually give the students just 10-15 minutes on one of these maths
sites and would have 10-15minutes on a literacy based site such as reading eggs
or RAZ kids.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Through experience I
have discovered if you can get the kids doing one of these once each day on top of normal work they
will have far more confidence. </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">At the
start it is often a good thing to look through the activities and choose the
one carefully according to knowledge.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">If
they get more than half wrong then they weren’t ready.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">I also use them as a
reward which is a great idea. Also great practice for multi-age classrooms as it can give you time with other children
and give them an opportunity to practice skills that sometimes get missed.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="color: #4f6228; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mathletics<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Such a brilliant site
and I quite often choose activities based on our units of work or somethink
that needs practise. I encourage the
fact that mistakes means you are learning.
<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<br /></div>

<a href="http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3565">http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3565</a><br />
<br />
This has quite a few different types of games and my year one student loves it
as a reward. We sometimes use the game
questions with our own physical ten frame. Great way for the student to mix it
up.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;">
<br /></div>
<br />

Great NSW Curriculum website with handy games to
do with many areas of maths. I have used it with all ages but probably
something I use as a change from Mathletics. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<i> In response to your `day in the life of…' Lee-Anne, very amusing and I can
totally sympathize with you!!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Day in the Life of Govie at Monkira<br />
</b>Monkira is halfway between Windorah and Bedourie-Sth West Qld</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7.30am- Alarm goes off and I contemplate getting straight out of bed…</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">hmmm, I'll lie here for just a minute or two until my mind unfuzz's</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7.55am- Over to the kitchen for brekky and check the emails before </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">work (no computer or phone in my schoolroom-but staff computer in </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">the kitchen which is next door). If I chose to get up at 5.50am-6am </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(?????WHY!!!!) I could have brekky cooked for me by the station </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">cook, but that's ok, I treasure my sleep second to hardly anything, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">so I'll put up with making my own brekky!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8.30am- Ty (7yo, Grade 2) wanders over (anytime between 8.30am and </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9am actually! depending on his mood and how much he has convinced </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">his Mum and Dad that he doesn't want to go to school!) We start </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Language and Math's set lessons until …..</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9.30am- Over to the main house to get on the phone for `on air' </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">lesson with the teacher (this is every morning 9.30am for half hour, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7-8 kids in the class) I have been at Monkira for over a year and </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">the phone has NEVER been in the schoolroom, oh! But there is TALK of </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">it getting put in….sometime!! But never fear, it makes for a bit </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">of `out of schoolroom' time which can be nice.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10.00am- Lesson over, Ty tries to wheedle some play time, sometimes </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">he gets it if I need to discuss things with his Mum. Also, 9.30am is </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">usually the rest of the station having smoko, so Ty has his smoko </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">after his lesson at 10am approx.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10.30- Back into the schoolroom after talking with the Mum and Ty's </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">elongated smoko break if he's smart enough about it- he's a clever </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">one!! Back into the Language and Math's set papers, reading, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">spelling tests until……..</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12.30-Lunch- my favourite time! All the staff are usually in for </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">lunch unless out mustering or fencing, so we all have a chat/gossip </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and at the moment Ty is learning to skip, soooooo, its all on </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">skipping competition between the head stockman and Ty….IN THE </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">KITCHEN!!!! All good fun.
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1.30pm- Back into the schoolroom, more Language and Math's sets, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">skipping practice (!), reading, paining, whatever it is that the </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">current unit is asking for.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4.00pm- Schools out! Ty is stoked, depending on his behaviour during </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">the day (or past days) he may earn a surprise from the prize box.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4.15pm- Check emails, study for uni (Teaching Degree), ride </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">horse….can vary immensely!
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7.00pm- Dinner time in the kitchen, Cookie can cook from 7 to 20 </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">people at any one meal time depending on what's going on and who's </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">around. We all watch Home and Away and comment on all the drama!! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Wash dishes, Ty tries Head stockman on for another skipping </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">competition</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7.30pm- Last time email check for the day, chat to the folks on the </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">phone if it's Monday…</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8.00pm- retire to my quarters (separate to the rest of the staff) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and study, read, go to sleep!!</span><br />

<b>When I was a govo my day was a bit different<br />
</b><br />
6:45 wake up, have shower <br />
<br />
7 head over to the house for breakfast and coffee with family and other
staff<br />
<br />
7:30 back in school room organise stuff for the day <br />
<br />
8:30 kids start sport <br />
<br />
9 school day starts <br />
<br />
both my kids had Centra lessons with their class teachers and Spanish
teacher. <br />
<br />
10:30 smoko <br />
<br />
11 back inside <br />
<br />
1pm lunch <br />
<br />
2 back in <br />
<br />
we usually had art twice a week which I always did in the afternoon. <br />
<br />
I finished at 3:30, <br />
<br />
cleaned the school room, did my own cleaning and washing, checked
emails, cleaned up after the pet sheep. my kids mum was always there so
I didn't have to watch them after school unless she was away or busy.
<br />
<br />
all govo positions are different, some bosses expect you to be with the
kids all day and others just while school is on, hope that helps<br />
<br />

things done. Or do the dishes or hang out washing to help out. This wasn’t in
the job description and I never felt as though I had to do it. </span></span></div>

<li><strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you like it?</span></strong></li>

<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Do you like being with your kids all day? </strong></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Aren’t you afraid they will miss out?</strong></span></li>
</ol>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #274e13;">Living and working with children in the bush is one of the most rewarding experiences. I have answered this from a governesses perspective.</span></strong></span><strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1) What we do all through the school day is learn. Simple as that. We create a learning environment tailered to the children. When the school day finishes we then sit down and prepare for the next.</span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2) I love it. Working one on one with children and yet getting to experience life in the outback at one with nature. Very rewarding.</span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3) With all the school events, community social events and neighbourhood get togethers sometimes it feels I just need a weekend at home. That is not to say after a long day at work I wish I had mates right there. Thats when I get on facebook, twitter, my blog, phone or email and communicate with my mates.</span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4) Not always but I love the kids no matter what. Living 24-7 with you work family can be tough but it is also rewarding. There are times when you need to step back and at times like that you head out for the weekend.</span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5) What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. That has been drilled into me. What they miss out on in one respect they get more of in another. </span></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></strong>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">An amazing 30 awards have been made available at Tudor House School for 2013 and beyond, thanks to the generosity of a benefactor who strongly supports the holistic education and unique offerings at the school.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /> Following recent media activity on the benefits of boys-only education and the importance of allowing diversity in the education landscape with Tudor House Headmaster, John Stewart, the school was approached by the benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, offering students from near and far the opportunity to explore their true potential and experience the wonders of the iconic boys-only primary school.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /> Mr Stewart was astounded at the generosity and philanthropy of the benefactor.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /> <i>"I am humbled. For so long I have been vocal in the benefits we offer boys – our boys go on to be leaders in the Australian community. We had Malcolm Fraser return to join us a fortnight ago; he was an Old Tudorian. Ed Cowan contacted our Deputy after he scored his first international century; he is an Old Tudorian, too! This generous donation just opens our doors, providing the opportunity for more boys. Our whole community will benefit because that is the power of a quality education. We are preparing and nurturing the minds of future leaders,"</i> said Mr Stewart.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /> The 30 new awards at the school are available for both day and boarding students.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /> <i>“Recipients of the scholarship will be selected based on their potential, their academic aptitude and the demonstration of abilities in other particular fields of school life, such as sport, music, drama or art relevant to the School’s educational offering,” </i>added Mr Stewart.</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7292565634665578773.post-37098350532863164672012-08-29T21:51:00.000+10:002012-09-05T21:53:22.019+10:00Chatter 29 August 2012: Assiting the child<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unleash Two... </span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></strong>
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How much assistance is too much when completing send in tasks? </span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With the new curriculum (QLD) there is a higher standard expected in quality of work and ICT skills, if we don't model and assist How do we expect them to know and be familiar with the standards required?</span></strong><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I guess it comes down to allowing the kids to stand on their own two feet and use you for support. Not to lean on you and you having to constantly stand them up if you get what I mean. Kids are very good at relying on us, and very bad at being independent. They are very capable, just be very supportive, help but don't do it for them. It is better in the long run</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would ask the teacher and the parent just to make sure i was doing the right thing by them. I'm with QLD curriculum. For me in my school room i think when a kid needs help- give it to them unless its clearly stated that they have to work independantly. I then go through and astrix where i helped and explain at the bottom of the sheet how i helped. I also get my kids to mark a lot of their own work because i believe immediate feedback is the only kind of feedback a kid can learn from. Its all clearly marked though in red and wrong asnwers are left for the teacher to see.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">ICT skills are difficult. If they are under year 3 then a lot of typing maybe needed but as they get older they should be more independant in reading and typing.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have found gauging from the teachers the most effective and it really does depend on the child. I have one child who needs help with reading and writing and I work with his teachers to work out what level of assistance i am giving and together with the teachers and school have actually worked out a clear definition of our assistance scale for this student. The other student I just chatted to the teacher but generally work on no assistance (help reading the question but not re-explaining concept in send in sheets) some assistance (clarifying concept and more discussion), a lot of assistance (having to clarifying and explain lots).</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just to clarify with my above comment- With a send in sheet i let them start independantly and only intervene when they are getting something wrong or when they ask for assistnace and i believe it is not within their capabilities to figure it out by themsevle. Emma is right- kids are good at relying on us and we need to know how to step back.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sometimes getting the work wrong is better than getting it right, we need to remember that!!!</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm having that battle with my year one Bianca, she's hellbent on spelling every word right so we spend a lot of time encouraging her to say the word and write what she hears. A LOT of wee tantrums over that one</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Persistance Bex Mclaughlin remember you are looking for her to get over that long term. It will require difficulties short term for you. Been in that situation and it is frustrating and tough</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I went through that with my year 1 last year Bex and she grew out of it... She is mostly independent now and my current year 1 is keen to do his own thing but I still help if they struggle.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make a dictionary with her, for future reference</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had a year one student perfectionist which for a while I would one reward her writing of words if they had mistakes in them because I would say that that means they are learning. Only did it long enough to settle the tears and tantrums. Eventually she wasn't so devistated by incorrect words. I also never marked writing with crosses. I put stars for correct words and ticks for correct sounds. The more ticks the more she was learning</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">send in tasks are what the kids are assessed on so giving the answer straight out is a not a good thing but helping them along the way if needed is okay. Let the teacher know how much help was needed. Whether they needed walked through or breezed through themselves. If they needed walked through add it to revision tasks because it has been covered before but maybe they just haven't grasped it yet and that is okay. If they really have problems I will either work through it with them verbally or with props so that they get there or we go through it after the sheet is done and correct it together before sending to school. If I do that we always leave the original worki there so the teacher can see what was going on. Re spelling I refuse to tell any of the kids in my schoolroom how to spell a word until they have tried it themselves. This is something I have done since I started so the kids are used to it now but when I started there were many complaints.When it comes to Mr yr1 I always praise him for getting the right sounds andpoint out the ones he got right then we write it with the right letters above the word he wrote. One trick I have used which was passed on from another was to (in spelling) tick each letter rather than the whole word so they can see what they got right and that you are happy with their try.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh I wish I had thought of ticking the correct letter/sound for my daughter. The teacher she had wanted her just to write and write and go back and do the punctuation later... that was year 2, by year 7 she still had that thought!! I have found it really very hard to teach her good punctuation and read her work while she is writing. I would do it differently if I could do it over.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">old teaching styles effect our learning for life and make it hold for supervisors. I had a block on homework even now after being made by my governess to do it in Year 6 in prep for highschool. I was an early finisher and at the time probably felt it was a punishment.</span><br />

<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></strong>
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How do you deal with employers who weren't entirely truthful? They advertised themselves as people who would welcome you into their family and spoke to you many times quelling your fears about being isolated, but when you got there they had lied and you weren't invited to any dinners, couldn't stay for lunch and had to go home straight after school. No one but you and the family on the station. How would you cope? What would you do? </span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This also would be the same for governesses who aren't truthful at applying for a job, so advice for both would be appreciated.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I spend a lot of time on FB and social media. I cook for myself a lot in the last couple of years so am use to typing and eating. I must admit I have never felt unwelcome in the last couple of years. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I do encourage govie to message or email my website because I can encourage employers to be honest in job descriptions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you don't have a car it would be hard but I get out on the weekends when you have a low contact job.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wouldn't stay. You don't have to be unhappy, there are lots of employers who are more friendly if that's what you're after.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wouldn't cope! You poor thing! I live in isolation and there's only me and the kids as my partner works away - I'm only 40 k from town but $$$ makes it hard to travel in more than once a week. Make use of the internet, keep social lines open and honestly if I were in your position, I would leave because I fully appreciate how difficult the situation is and how isolated and alone and unappreciated you must feel.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you brought this situation to the attention of your employers? Open the lines of communication with them and discuss it. Are they saying you can't attend lunches and dinners or have they not invited you because the understanding was you were invited in the first instance and maybe you're too shy to accept te offer?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You need to communicate your concerns with your employer. I'm sure they will appreciate your honesty and understand where you're coming from. It could be a simple misunderstanding, a communication breakdown or something more. You won't know unless you say so.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With regard to a governess that wasn't truthful on their application, as an employer I would be rathe upset because this is a person entrusted with te care of children, and for me personally, honesty is everything. It would be a deal breaker if it was genuine dishonesty. A miscommunication could be worked out.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sometime personalities don't click, have the govie make an effort to ask if assistance is needed to help with preparation of those meals, too many times as a boss I've worked long days to only come home to prepare dinner and home tutor only turns up when ready to eat. It may not be paid time but be sure to make an effort on both sides to find a compromise. Don't be too quick to bail out as it will only create more ill filling.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>How are all the other QLDers coping with the C2C system? Does anyone have any good tips?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Be organised!!! It's so much more work than the old papers.... Don't get behind... It's hard to catch up haha</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Modify them!!! There is no need to spend say 40mins on a lesson if you and your students get it earlier, that gives you time for taking it slow in other areas. You need to teach them in context, otherwise the learning is irrelevant and won't be meaningful to the kids.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Like B said, not that I am doing C2C, but with any lessons, if the child understand and grasps the concept and can demonstrate to you they understand, then move on before they get bored</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If for instance there are two math or english lessons that have to same concept I combine them and modify them ... keeping ahead of the schedule and also gives you some freedom to have a sick day or the days that its just not working !!!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>I am writing up my resume and cover letter. What sort of things are important for an outback employer to know? I have come to realise that governessing is not just a job it is a whole lot more so an ordinary resume won't do.</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Information about yourself and background. Not only will you be working for the family but living with and around them. You will know them on a professional and personal level.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'd be interesred in answers to this one... after 15 years nannying and working in a childcare centre, I've just applied for my first outback govie job. I have a phone interview in the morning. Any tips would be appreciated.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I look for, Someone who is genuinely interested & passionate about kids and skills in that area. Not so much jilleroo type skill info as that's not the main focus</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Flexible, easy going, positive, willing to learn, eager to try new things, keen to fit in with the family, have common sense.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ability to expect the unexpected, lots of patience, stability and flexibility is a major key.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">ABility to use your initiative and to chip in and help. Ability to think outside the square and innovate when necessary. Fun to be around, positivity and a sense of humour. Phone numbers for character references, rather than letters - OBVIOUSLY you are going to have good letters in a resume, but when you provide a phone number, employers can ask whatever questions they want.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">not so much your resume but that you can reassure them that you can change a tyre and drive on dirt roads.... maybe more for the interview.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A genuine love and passion for all things children ... have had too many employee's that after a few weeks admit that they actually really don't like working with children !!!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We were making peanut butter sandwiches. Miss five referred to it as "penis-butter". Oh dear... :-)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My child once went to ask me something and instead of saying my name he went through the names of everyone on the station and then some of the animals before finally getting to my name. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He was a little embarrassed but I saw the funny side</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tonight the 2yo here actually called a family friend into the lounge room where there are mattresses on the floor, asked him to read a story, help with the blankets, turn off the lights then told him to please leave the room. We were laughing like crazy. She actually put herself to bed because a few minutes later she was sound asleep.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

I was impressed that she used it in context...</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and another, we had german backpackers here the other day with a baby and my year 2 student was telling the class on air about them when one of the other kids asked what colour the baby was...Year 2 got the funniest look on her face and said in an are-you-serious voice 'white, like the rest of us' Made me laugh</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'd never seen a wild pig, and when we went to the show the boy I teach went to the petting zoo and said 'see this is what a pig is!!!'.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I got asked what I ate when the dinosaurs were alive. I was 17 at the time</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">we had a year 1 come to school for a few months and she tole my girls she was 3 metres ahead in her school work (3 days ahead she meant), my girls and I had a little giggle in our heads and just said, wow that wonderful, you must work really hard. We didn't want to destroy her confidence.</span><br />

<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></strong>
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Needing some help, my governess and I are finding it really hard to get through to my 6 yr old daughter. She's not trying and gets to a point that if she doesn't want to do something she just flat out refuses to do it. Don't know how to get around this so any help would be appreciated</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would try to find out why she doesn't want to do something. I was like that when I was young and would get really rude and obnoxious, turns out I have a very bad learning disability that no one picked up on. Not saying that's what she has but finding an underlying cause is most of your battle won.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Short, achievable tasks. Break things up into minutes, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and display milestones she has reached. Then the sense of achievement will come. Intrinsic motivation comes when you have experienced success.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Give her two choices, one being the thing that you want her to do and the other being something that she really won't want to do. Make her choose from the options</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Reverse psycology is my best method. Sometimes you also have to get tough by taken something the love away or not letting them do it. Some kids work better being motivated by incentives.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Incentives and positive reinforcement. Reward system works a treat.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When you work it out let me know :) in all honestly it's hard but short bursts, and sometimes I'm still at a loss myself</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I work with a boy who has learning and behavioural issues - on average at least half of my day is spent trying to coerce and convince him to get through the work we need to do. I often find that if he is refusing to do the work I try and find another way to come at it. I try to relate the work in question to him and his likes as much as possible. It also works for him to totally change the subject and let him tell me a story of his own and gradually easing in some questions from the work. With my child i find that the soft ans easy approach works best, i have tried the tough love and stern approach with him but that just gets me nowhere! People have also suggested reward charts etc which can sometimes work wonders. I agree with the post above though, in the way that if things are extremely difficult you may need to look into the cause a bit further.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had that trouble with my 8 yr old then someone suggested a reward system so on the kitchen bench we have a jar and each time he does something without a tanty or shows initiative and thoughtfulness like asking if I want him to set the table he gets a token which is just a hand written note saying what he's done and in his room we have a list of how many tokens are worth things we wrote the list together and some of the examples are 10 tokens is 1 hr of laptop time or hire a DVD 20 tokens is invite a friend to sleep over or a toy to the value of $20 I'm getting some really good results </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is unusual for a child that young to lack motivation to that extent. Can you try to find the reason for it? It is hard to tackle a problem if you don't know what it is. Is the work too hard? Is she unused to the long hours of school? Does she exhibit this behaviour in other areas of life or just in school? ...I am assuming you are referring to school work since you said 'she is not trying'. In terms of strategies...I am in complete agreement with Kate. External rewards are also useful in the short term. Lots and lots of praise when she does it right. Have you talked with her SODE teacher about it? Maybe the expectations could be modified so that you can work on building her up to it rather than trying to keep up with hectic workload and getting more and more stressed. Good luck. I hope you can work it out.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some kids it is just a natural part of their personality to be unmotivated and stubborn. I myself was a natural debater and would spend hours arguing with Mum and the govie just for the sake of it. Also was a kid myself who just did enough to get buy</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sit down and talk to her about, ask her why she doesn't want to and explain the benefits if what happens if she does it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a teacher that majored in psychology I can't tell you how important finding the reason behind the behaviour is. Reward systems, bribes and coercing work in the short term, but eventually this problem will resurface. In high school when you aren't there to tackle the issue. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It might be a simple reason, it's worth discussing with her.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Christine's idea is good - you can also use pasta - when the jar is full = reward, since that is visual and counting too! Good luck!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Above had a ripper of an idea (not stealing your thunder) she found the child loved lego so each reward was a piece of lego. I am finding this type of approach is working. Short bursts too. :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So many great suggestions - and thanks, cos I'm only new to this, but they do go through stages of doing it and then not wanting to hey! My girl did a lot of this - she only likes to do things if she knows she can get it right. Now my boy has got to the same age and seems to be doing the same, but from a different "reason" - he "gets tired" (read bored - I think I have to challenge him, yet still not overwhelm him or he too doesn't want to do badly!)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>I get frustrated when I email an applicant and they don’t respond to say they are interested in finding out more about my position or not. What should I do to make it easier and more comfortable for you to answer? Is it the sheer number of job offers? How can I make mine stand out? What makes a job more attractive? PS thanks for all the maths websites the other week, the kids love the new ones :)</strong></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For job attractiveness - the biggest thing for me when I was looking at different families was the accommodation. I knew I would need space at the end of a working day so I was looking for families who could offer me a separate space (not in the main homestead though sharing with other workers would have been fine) with space to cook and a bathroom.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">& for me I need my own Internet for uni (science/education). But mostly it's the stuff you can't make more attractive that are my criteria; location & grades/ages of children! I love seeing photos of the school room & accommodation etc though it definitely makes me read those jobs more thoroughly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am not sure you can make it any better for them to reply, it seems that people just don't, which is disappointing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yep - photos can be really important. Especially when seriously considering a job, it's very handy to be able to see the space you will be living in and know what you will want to take to make it your own. As for people not responding, I'm not too sure about that; at times I have held off replying for a couple of days if I'm waiting to hear from a different prospective employer, but that's it - I think it's only polite to respond either way. As for making it easier and more comfortable to answer, sometimes it can be really hard to start a dialogue when it feels like you're just talking about yourself. A few questions and perhaps sharing of some of your/your kids interests make it easier for me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Someone said to me they had applicants who just want to write on their centrelink form that they had applied for a job. These people were never serious about the job at all. If this is happening I think it is really unfair.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>This maybe silly but what sort of school events will I have to attend as a governess? What sort of things can happen at these events? Are they fun? Should I be with the kids? I start governessing in 4 weeks and am excited and nervous all at once.</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My favourite at our school is minischool. These are several days where you stay usually in the quarters of a school family and do activities. All the parents and govies pitch in and help with catering. Campfire at night. Staying in tents, etc. Lots of fun and maybe even a drink or two with your mates</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Minischool and integration days were the main ones for us. Minischool happened once a term with one big one where both campuses united for the week and the other three just our campus. Governesses spent the day helping in the kitchen, catching up, sleeping (since they were long days and some governesses had sole care for their charges for the full three days) and preparing for evening events (fancy dress disco and the Minute to Win It night were definitely highlights). Integration days happened every second week for those who could make it into town. We dropped our charges at the school in the morning then usually went to have a coffee with the other governesses, ran errands, checked on charges at lunchtime and then had lunch out together. Both super fun experiences!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Depends on which state you are in and your employers... I always went into town when we had inschools but was only ever required if the mum wasn't able to, they treated it as family time and I had my own time. Whereas a lot of the other girls did everything with the kids as their families needed them to.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It depends on the school. With Katherine School of the air we had minischools, inschool, school camp and swim week. Minischools were when all the kids from an area got together and camped for the week and did group activities, sport and socialisation. Inschool is in Katherine and the kids go to school in a classroom with their year level and mums do a home tutor conference. School camp is usually at Batchelor, near Darwin, absolutely gorgeous place to camp!! Usually coinciding with Naplan tests... bugger, and lots of socialisation. Then swim week is 5 mornings of swimming, some afternoon and night social activities and thursday night is school concert/awards night. As for whether you would attend, that would be upt o your employer, but most come and some bring the kids on their own or have the kids while the mum is shopping, etc, pretty individual really. They are fun events, if you want them to be fun. Your employer will/should tell you if you will be with the kids. Some of our events are everyone in in this fine weather and others are the home tutors sit back and do other stuff/relax etc and the teachers take the kids.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It really depends on the school. We have minischool once a year for each year level where we go in to school for the week and the kids do school with theirteacher and classmates. We always have a great time and pitching in to help with anything at these is always a good idea. We also have cluster each term where teachers come out to a town closer to the families, I think our school goes to 5 places. These are fun for the kids as they do school with all the kids from their area. It is a great chance to catch up with everyone and there is usually information sessions for govies and parents for part of the day. We also have sports skills, swimming skills, sports day, swimming carnival, cultural camp among other events. At the beginning of the year we have a Home Tutor workshop for a couple of days to cover anything that is worrying people and as an introduction to those that are new. The school often organise speakers to come to the school, meanwhile the kids do school with their teachers. At the end of the year we have a presentation night and BBQ. There is also often a market or something similar during the year. We have also in the past had workshops on a Friday once a term for govies so that we can talk about new work and problems and then we spend the weekend socialising. Every school event is very social and always a lot of fun.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">SOTA (of which there is finally another govie!!) has a 3 day mini school each term; there is usually 1 - 2 full days of training included for the govies/mums, and the rest of the time is spent lunching and running errands. At events like these the govie is expected to participate in the training, join in the lunching if she likes and look after the kids when necessary after school. Other than that you have free time, and can spend it with your family or doing whatever you choose. At events like swimming and sport carnivals you are usually expected to go in with the family and help/cheer.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>As an employer when is it okay to approach experienced governesses about next years job? I don’t want to offend their current employers. Are there any protocols or etiquette to follow?</strong></span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would have thought Aug onwards would be okay. A lot of people advertise sept onwards I believe. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I encourage families to get their job positions up in September and October as that is when I start concentrated advertising.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is no harm in asking!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am the same but as governess I dont know when i should start looking for a new job, my current job is already being advertised though as my employer knows I would like to move on next year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been a governess or 3 years with the same family and in the Kimberlys labeled as hot governess property as my child is off the boarding school. I have been getting offers since February this year. I've had over 15 offers already. I am up front and tell my current employer everything. I've made no decisions yet. I think there is not harm in asking. And it's up to the governess to keep the current family informed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh gosh - I ahven't even thought about next year yet!! Better get cracking...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">first I'd find out if they plan on leaving the job they have ... I know I was approached in the last term of last year and I was flattered that I was thought of but I had committed to stay where I was and happy with that. I know mums that are asking the govies now or letting it know that they are looking.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Only haldway through the year keep enjoying and don't worry. Your bosses will let you know when they want a decision. But if you do know you want to go then let them know.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have always found our own governesses with no experience.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last year I had offers from March onwards ended up with about 11 offers. Having this happen I felt obliged to commit early and although I am happy with my job.. those extra few months would have been good as I decided I would have prefered to move away.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>As the end of term gets closer my employer has asked me to think about if I want to come back next year. I feel privileged that they asked but how do I politely let them know I think I want to move on? When should I do this? I love this job but want to experience other situations.</b></span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I gave a term's notice and that seemed to be about standard for the other governesses ending at the end of the year with our school that year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you have made up your mind to move on, your employer will look at you with respect........ firstly for giving them LOTS of notice and 2ndly for being so honest, enjoy your last term and leave on a positive note! Being open and honest and having good communication are the keys to a great working relationship :-)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Agree with the comments above. The more notice the easier it is for them to be organised to start advertising in the coming months.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Agree with above comments, let them know as soon as you've made up your mind and let them know how much u have enjoyed your time.. they will be understanding!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">i think exactly how you said it, thank you and I feel priveleged that you have asked but I would like to experience other kids/places/people etc. Lots of notice is good, maybe the start of the last term you are planning to work until and work to the end of that term like you are staying for the next year, at least give them that courtesy too as you would like to be treated well until the end of the year. Be upfront and honest, it is best and people appreciate it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My boss asked me in term 2 and I told her straight out that I would like to move on and see another state, she was fine with it and it has given her plenty of time to search for a new governess.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes, be flattered that they value you, but let her know you want to grow more, and that will give her plenty of time to find someone else. I would also try to keep a good govie, but there are not many who stay more than a year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Share what you are thinking, be honest and even offer to help with the hunt for a new govie. Do it as soon as possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Thats lovely that they want you to come back, but if you dont, they need time to find someone else; so its polite to say thanks and that your flattered but want to do something else next year... Do not keep your employer hanging; honesty is the best policy!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you have notice periods in your contracts of employment? And agree be honest and let people know its good for everyone</span><br />
